Just thought I'd post this for those of you in the NYC area, or for those planning a visit in the next three months. This exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art looks promising...

Art of the Samurai: Japanese Arms and Armor, 1156–1868
October 21, 2009–January 10, 2010

From what I hear they have many pieces from private collectors from Japan. They have more than they can display at once and plan to change the exhibit a few times during the run. They also encourage visitors to bring a magnifying glass to get a close up look at the swords.

There are also panel discussions free to the public on November 8th... Okisato Fujishiro will be there...
