Recently at the dojo where I study Aikido our head instructed has been showing us ways that we can apply our aikido techniques to real life situations. The main situation that has come up is what happens if and when your attacked by some one or some ones who know a different martial art or system of combative skills? He has just shown us some Arneis(philipeno Knife and stick fighting) techniques in which we spent one class learning the basics of Arneis how to move, how to strike block how to use sticks and knives the Arneis way. (in which the whole class I felt I was killing the art because of how poor my comprehention of Arneis was.) The next class we reviewed the Arneis we learned the class before but then we applied or Aikido to it and how to use Aikido methods effectivly to defend against Arneis, I believe this is a very effective way to train your self and to broden your horizons and knowledge of your martial art system. Both classes for me were an eye opening experience as well as a humbling one. I know I still have a long ways to go before my Aiki can flow smoothly and I have also gained a deeper respect for other arts. I still believe there is no suprior art only well rounded and knowledgeable practiconers of the arts.
Next we will be learning how to counter grapling and boxing. The skys the limit.
